Editorial Policy & Methodology

How we research, build, and update our insurance calculators β€” and why we’re committed to keeping them independent.

Our editorial mission

Insurance decisions have real financial consequences β€” underinsured homes, coverage gaps discovered mid-claim, life policies that don’t cover what people assumed. Our job is to give people accurate, unbiased information before those moments arrive, not after. Every calculator, article, and table on this site is held to a standard of factual accuracy, source transparency, and independence from commercial interests.

We do not accept payment from insurance carriers, brokers, or any third party to influence our calculator outputs or editorial content. Our only revenue is Google AdSense display advertising, which has no bearing on the tools we build or the information we present.

How the calculators are built

Every calculator on FreeInsuranceIQ is developed through a research-first process:

Where the data comes from

Our insurance calculators draw on the following authoritative sources:

When we update

Our editorial team maintains the following review schedule:

Annual Updates (minimum)

Every January, we review all calculators against newly published Federal Poverty Level guidelines, updated ACA marketplace premium data, and NAIC annual market reports.

Quarterly Updates

Premium benchmarks, coverage cost ranges, and state fee data are reviewed quarterly to reflect current market conditions. Insurance premiums are sensitive to interest rates, claims environments, and regulatory changes β€” we update when material shifts occur.

Event-Driven Updates

When ACA open enrollment rules change, when USCIS updates fee schedules, or when major actuarial benchmarks shift, we update affected calculators promptly. All pages display a "Last updated" date to indicate when content was last reviewed.

Editorial independence & advertising

FreeInsuranceIQ displays Google AdSense advertisements. Ads are selected entirely by Google's systems β€” we have no control over which ads appear, and advertising has zero influence on calculator methodologies or editorial content.

We are not affiliated with, sponsored by, or compensated by any insurance carrier, broker, agent, or insurance comparison platform. Our calculators are independent educational tools β€” not quote engines, not lead-generation forms. We never share your information with insurance companies.

Some blog content may contain affiliate links to insurance education resources. Where affiliate links appear, they are disclosed. Affiliate income does not influence calculator results or editorial decisions.

Accuracy & corrections

Insurance cost estimates are inherently approximate β€” your actual premium depends on dozens of factors specific to you, your location, your health history, and the insurer you choose. Our calculators are designed to give you a realistic ballpark, not a guaranteed quote.

If you believe a calculator contains an error, please contact us at support@freeinsuranceiq.com with the subject "Calculator Error." We investigate all reported errors and publish corrections promptly.

Important: Before purchasing any insurance policy, always get quotes from multiple licensed insurers and consult a licensed insurance professional in your state. For health insurance, visit healthcare.gov for official enrollment and subsidy eligibility information.
